“Local Decisions; “Glocal” Impacts: Data Centers, Environmental Justice, & Public Health in Farmington and Beyond,” will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Dakota County Public Library in Farmington (508 3rd St, Farmington, MN).
As Farmington and other Minnesota communities contend with a proposed hyperscale data center, the Coalition for Responsible Data Center Development (CRDCD) is partnering with Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate to host a public educational event and community discussion on the potential health and climate impacts of hyperscale data center development.
“Residents are rightly concerned with both the potential immediate impacts to their health nearby and with the health of others across the globe, who could be impacted by material sourcing, e-waste disposal, climate-related extreme weather events, enabled emissions from AI-powered fossil fuel extraction, and more. That’s why we’re holding this event,” said Kris Akin, Partnership Coordinator with the Coalition for Responsible Data Center Development.
While NDAs delayed residents’ access to information about the 2.5-million-square-foot hyperscale data center planned for Farmington, it is expected to use more electricity than Monticello’s nuclear plant creates. Diesel generators are planned for backup power. The developer has not released information on how it will source or dispose of electronic hardware, or about the data center’s actual uses.
Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate’s summary report, Data Centers, Health, and Climate in Minnesota, details the health implications of data center-related pollution, including air, electronic waste, noise, and water pollution.
"We know that data center emissions harm our health locally; air pollution from US data centers led to $6.7 billion in public health costs in 2023,” said presenter Ella Norman, a University of Minnesota medical student and volunteer with Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate. “More recently, we learned that AI running on these data centers enables even more emissions elsewhere, by accelerating fossil fuel extraction. As I enter the medical field, I know that my generation of providers will be left to endure and treat the health impacts of these emissions. I’d rather we have the chance to prevent some of them.”
Coalition for Responsible Data Center Development is a Farmington-based nonprofit dedicated to connecting Minnesota leaders and residents to mitigate the impacts of data center development.

Since we organized in November of 2024- we have connected with other concerned people and other organizations working to protect their communities and natural resources. People and the planet are the reason we have become united across the state, nation and world. The withdrawal of the lawsuit has only solidified our committment to the Farmington community, other communities across the state of Minnesota and elsewhere.
